Comments:
- No real surprises here. Kaspersky and BitDefender continue to lead the paid AVs, with 100% blocking and no false positives.
- The free AVs (Avast, Panda) continue to perform well. It is worth noting that Windows 7 free out-of-box AV protection (Microsoft Security Essentials) has increased to almost 96%, which represents a real improvement over the 85% protection it demonstrated as recently as March, 2015. This beat out McAfee's paid protection (94%), which is what Dell recommends.
- Test bed was Windows 7, and only 393 test cases were evaluated in the October tests. I'm still not convinced that the paid AVs offer value to justify their annual fees, for only a small increment in protection. As always, YMMV.
